Pastor Sean Jarrett is the senior pastor at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And while in Central Arkansas he contacted me for a portrait session. Of course, I was happy to do so. I have photographed him a few times and even his family. But this time I wanted to do something different. I just didn't know what.
I met him at the hotel he was staying and setup one light (Paul Buff Alien Bee 800 w/ 22" beauty dish - camera left). I didn't have much working space or much time; otherwise, I would have created a little rim light (camera right). As long as the face is illuminated, I am happy. Besides, I like a moody look.
So what did I do differently? Well, it was nothing new to the game. I shot this portrait at 50mm f/1.2. I usually shoot portraits at 70mm or above. And I don't shoot them so close and shallow.
Although I shot this at f/1.2 and with a strobe, I didn't use an ND filter. I don't even own one. So I backed the strobe a little and set it to its lowest setting.
I like it; I love it.
Below is where we actually shot this.
